Introduction to training & fitness section
Whether your goal is to compete or to complete, preparation is essential to ensure you achieve your objectives. Adventure racing is one of the world’s most demanding sports, physical and mental challenges place extreme stress upon both body and mind. The manner in which you prepare for racing has significant impact upon the performance of you and your team. Make 2007 your most successful and enjoyable adventure racing year, a little planning goes a long, long way.

This section will provide a monthly training article to help you prepare for upcoming events. We will discuss issues from core strength to navigation skills and involve you in the process. There will be case studies, examples of race scenarios and clear guidelines which will help you integrate all of the chosen topics into your training and racing schedule. Here’s the programme for 2007:

  • Core strength routines – essential core exercises for adventure racers
  • Flexibility routines – essential stretches to accompany your core routine
  • Planning a training programme –How to structure a basic training schedule for adventure racing
  • Testing your fitness and interpreting results – testing for cycle / run / kayak and how to interpret your results
  • Using a heart rate monitor – setting your training zones and how to use your monitor for racing and training
  • Race planning – focusing upon key demands of events and how to best prepare & plan ahead for success
  • Foot navigation training – easy ways to practice effective navigation on foot and fit into regular training
  • MTB navigation training – easy ways to practice effective navigation on your bike and fit into regular training
  • Mountain bike training – Specifics of cycle training, physiology and techniques with particular reference to off road riding
  • Run training - Specifics of run training, physiology and techniques with particular reference to off road running
  • Kayak training - Specifics of marathon kayak training, physiology and techniques
  • Analysing and evaluating race performances – reflecting, evaluating and planning for the next race / next year
